A sad, sad experiment

Jewish members of parliament are competing among themselves to see who is more radical and who can hurt Germany more. German democracy must take proactive measures to defend itself from the enemy within.

This quote, one would assume, is a pretty vile bit of antisemitism coming from a unrepentant bigot.

In fact, it’s a repurposing of a quote from Israeli Member of the Knesset Danny Danon, in response to MK Haneen Zoabi writing the foreword to Ben White’s new book “Palestinians in Israel: Segregation, Discrimination and Democracy.” I simply changed the phraseology from Arab to Jew, to make a point about what is acceptable discrimination and hatred towards Arabs in Israel, at this point in time.

The original quote:

In response to Zoabi’s foreword, MK Danny Danon (Likud), stated in an interview with Arutz 7, Monday afternoon that, “Arab MKs are competing among themselves to see who is more radical and who can hurt Israel more. Israeli democracy must take proactive measures to defend itself from the enemy within.” MK Danon asserted, “The place of MK Zoabi is not in the Israeli Knesset but behind bars.

Look at the texture of anti-Arab hatred, it shares the exact same texture as European antisemitism. They both share idea that there is a dangerous minority in the shadows, plotting to undermine and hurt the majority from within. Quite significantly, some on the nationalist/zionist right use the same argument against other Jews, particularly those who are critical (as I am) of Israeli policy and the direction Israeli society seems to be headed.

It is important to recognize the power of ideology and its consequences. The sort of blind nationalism that was instrumental to the rise of european antisemitism, is being resuscitated by the ‘West’ to discriminate against Arabs and muslims. Just as we say never again to the holocaust, we must also say never again to the ideology that supported that atrocious act.

FWIW, Zizek gave a quite brilliant talk on this topic that I recommend. It gets particularly good around videos 2 and three.
